Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax?
Technically, tip on the pre-tax amount — a tip is for service, not the government's cut. But the difference on a $50 bill is only $1-2, so most people tip on the total for simplicity. Both are socially acceptable.
What if the service was poor?
10% is the minimum acknowledgment tip. Before leaving under 15%, consider whether the issue was the server's fault (rude, inattentive) vs. the kitchen's fault (food quality, wait time). Servers often pay tax on assumed tip income, so zero tips hurt beyond the missed income.
How do you split a bill when people ordered different amounts?
